Waves (For Juho Myllylä)(2023)
Waves (For Juho Myllylä) is a solo piece written for the Finnish recorder virtuoso Juho Myllylä. This 9-minute work for bass(et) recorder and sine waves is based on primitive forms of sound synthesis through both acoustic and electronic means. Rather than conceiving this composition as a dialogue between recorder and sine waves, Waves brings the together to form a single narrative. The stillness of the sine wave’s harmonic structure provide stability and continuity, while the recorder’s repetitive patterns propel the narrative ad aeternum. The electronics are programmed using Max MSP, and they are automatically activated by a frequency recognition system.
Waves (For Juho Myllylä) was commissioned by Gaudemaus Muziekweek, November Music and Grachtenfestival, having its first performance in September 2023 at TivoliVredenburg, in Utrecht. This creation was possible thanks to the support of Batavierhuis.
